It can be hard to know what to look for in a Disability Employment Services (DES) Provider and even harder to tell if your current provider is doing a good job.

Searching through providers in your area can be a daunting task, so how do you find a Job Coach that works for you and helps you achieve your goals?

1) Are you understood?

A Disability Employment Services Provider needs to take the time to build a relationship with you to help you find your best potential.

So, what does understanding you include?

Everyone is different and finds work at a different speed. That’s why your unique story is central to all we do. It’s about listening so we can respect your goals and abilities as we work together

There are many ways DES providers approach your initial appointment however you should leave knowing that your Job Coach will be able to explore what interests you, drives you and ready to find the situations where you will perform your best.

Tip: Contact your local Disability Employment Services provider and ask to talk to the exact person who would be your Job Coach and see if you feel confident with what they can offer you afterwards.

We believe it’s important for you to get to know your Job Coach.

2) Goal setting, commitment, and flexibility

Your JobCoach should commit to supporting you in a way that works for you. There needs to be flexibility in communications to fit in with your life. Ideally, you will have options to call, text, facetime or check-in at locations that suit you.

Your provider of choice needs to be committed to helping you. You will know they are committed if theunderstand you, provide the flexibility that works for you, look to improve your life and listen to your feedback.

The opportunity to give input and be heard at all stages of your experience is often overlooked, how else can they know they’ve really worked for you?

3) The big picture

There needs to be a commitment to ongoing support for you and your employer.

This can only happen when a role matches your skills, interests, and abilities. You should know when you start with your Job Coach what their post-placement support involves and how they will continue to assist you to perform your best.

While our company is new, our team has been helping people take the next step in employment, health and wellbeing for over 30 years. This experience means we know the benefits of being in work – it’s the reason we are here.

A provider that works for you will be dedicated to the bigger picture, improving your life for the reasons you choose.

4) Your choice matters

You should feel comfortable in making this journey with the people you choose. We highly recommend speaking with your future Job Coach before you transfer to ensure you’re making the right decision.
